Shooting Bench Plans?

Has anyone got any great ideas for a shooting bench. I am going to build a bench down in the pasture that might get me out as far as 450yrds+ and was wondering what kind of thoughts and tricks anyone has for making the best bench possible?

Here's a simple one to build. Use 3 ea. 30" pcs. 1-1/4 black or Gal. pipe threaded on both ends, 6 pipe flanges. 3 for feet and 3 to mount on underside of top. Top can be made out of whatever you want. The 1&1/8 one floor plywood works great. I used two layers of 5/8 OSB in the one pictured with the two pieces glued and screwed together. It's heavy and inconvinent to move around but it's solid for target work.
My business is tooling up for a production model bench now and we'll hopefully be market testing with 15 production benches in March or April if you want to wait that long. It's completly different from the one described here.
You can get an idea of it at

Hey Mid MO 204
Opossum is right he is working on a super nice shooting bench that he is going to have out on the market soon for the long range shooter's. He stop by my place this last fall and had dinner with me and the wife and also let me have a look at his shooting bench and its nice. ITs not a 360 bench but it made for a guy that likes to long range shoot or take out in the field to do a little varmint hunting. He has it setup to carry every thing that you need out in the field ......... even your rifle will hook up to the bench to be carried.
I also think he is going to be asking a fair price on it for all the work he has put in to it.

I am sure of it that Opossum will work with you on it.

Opossum is a super nice guy ! smile

The Rick Jamison shooting bench that he sold plans for years ago is similar to what Opossum has pictured, except the top is ambidextrous and the pipe legs are set at 11 degrees. The two front legs angle out at a 45 degree angle and the rear angles out straight back. Rick claims there is something magical about the 11 degree angle on the legs and I'm inclined to agree. When shooting to get into the 1000 yard club, my buddy had a high dollar BR swivel type setup that we tried initially, but it just had too much shake in it for 1000 yard shooting. The Jamison bench was like shooting off a concrete bench at the range, solid as a rock.

Your right Gunsmith !

Now this new shooting bench that Opossum is building to sell will be soild as a rock also and I am sure that someone me could make some 1000 plus yard shots off of it.

Thanks for your ideas and opinions. I definitely want a bench for down in the pasture and I'm sure I can't hold out that long for one, but it doesn't need to be portable I can sink this thing into the ground and keep it there. Some day I will get to shot some PD's somewhere and then maybe I will know more of what I am looking for in a shooting bench. However I have had many sleepless nights watching myself shot prarie dogs on the inside of my eyelids! I 'm sure that if I ever find a place to go that isn't so expensive I will need a bench that is portable so I will be watching for it's arrival. Thanks again for any and all of your guy's ideas. Good Luck out there!

I found a great one in the "Rifleman" about 20-22 yrs ago, but I lost all my mags in a fire.

I have built about 100 of them, and can send you my drawings if you want.

There is a gent over at the Varmints Den that made one out of a adult mobility walker. Definately a light weight alternative to the massive commercial jobs out there with a limited investment in time and money if you can pick one up used.

All I got to say is, man there are 1000 ways to make a protable shooting bench and all of them are very smart.

I aslo, saw one with a wheel chair.  I will look for it and post it once I find it.  but, it is able to rotate 360 degrees and you dont even touch the ground!

Would you post this if you can find it? i have a friend I hunt with that's in a wheelchair. It sounds like it might be the cats pajamas.

Thanks,

Eric
