Does anyone have a .17HMR Semi-Auto Rifle?

How does it shoot?

I saw one in Pierre SD at the Dokota Mart a few years ago. It looked like a space gun.

I thought Ruger was suppose to come out with theirs, but I couldn't even find the 22rfm on the site.Clark custom guns did make them a couple years ago. They show it in the sidebar index, but I couldn't find it.Call them and see what they say.Seems I seen something recently about some malfunction, shooting 17HMR from a semi auto.

I have a Rem 597 in 17HMR. It's the heavy barrel in the laminate stock. It shoots GREAT! Funny you ask though, just yesterday I received a letter from Rem to recall it. They'll give me a coupon for 1/2 of what I paid for it to go towards another Rem product. I must live in a cave. I havent heard anything on the problems with the 17HMR and semi-auto rifles. Seems that Rem isn't the only one with the problem. I think Ruger and Clark stopped production. I have'nt had any problems with mine yet!

I would stay away from the auto's. My buddy Jim on here had one and it did a lot of jamming just about every time he went to shoot it. Jim sold it as soon as we got back from out west PD hunting.
I own a CZ 452-2E ZKM varmint model 17HMR and I really like it.

I think there are good semi-autos out there for a 17HMR but I can tell you Remington isn't one of them! The 597 is a POS

I also have a Savage 93R17 that shoots great and my 597 Rem shoots right with it if not better. I'm pushing 2000 rounds out of the 597 and haven't had a jam jet.
Go figure?

I've owned several 17's. The best shooter I had was a Weatherby and why I traded it I don't know. Maybe too nice for a truck gun. I have a pair of Savage 93R17's in stainless and they are both great. The rap I heard on 17 auto was the jamming. Ruger had one out for a while but discontinued due to the jamming. If someone made one that was dependable AND accurate I'd own it.

Terry,

I would do some serious checking before I purchased one. There all all kinds of warnings out by CCI Ammunition and other companies concerning the 17HMR and semi-auto rifles. Read several warnings this week. The Bolt Action weapons are fantastic..

Am interested in restarting this thread for more discussion.  My buddy has a Volquartzen in 17 HMR and has had very few problems with jamming.  But what has happened a few times is that the case rim will blow.  My gut feeling from reading the warnings is that Remington is more concerned about possible liability from something like that happening than from some jamming.  What's more interesting is that my friend has a 10/22 converted to 17 HM2 (by a custom outfit) and has had a lot of problems with cases blowing up.  Most of the time it's the rim but occasionally the whole case splits.  Us two non-engineers have theorized that the bore on a .17 caliber is just too small for gases to vent properly on a blow-back type of action.  So there is still too much pressure in the case when it starts moving out of the chamber and can lead to case failure.  How does that sound for a bunch of nonsense?  Would be interesting if somebody made a piston-type action rather than a blow-back action in .17 rimfire.  Would probably be expensive though.  You engineers out there have any other theories?

I just got my savage 93r17. It shoots great was experimenting with different ammo. It likes cci the best but. I had a couple stick in the chamber and simple held pressure on the ejector and found the cases split at the shoulder. Then I looked at the remainder of the box of unfired shells and found 6 more out of 40 unfired ones that are split in the box. Will call cci monday. I have seen warnings from cci and federal up at Sinclairs but only warning about shooting them in semi autos. Other than that its the best birthday present I,ve gotten myself in a  few years.

Chuckwagginprod,

That is a beautiful gun.

I got myself an Anschutz bolt action in .17 HMR and then another in .17 Mach 2 and both are wonderfull shooters. I picked them both up used but like new and they are definitely keepers. The Mach 2 is generally as effective as the HMR but not out as far. The accuracy of both is phenominal. No problems at all so far with the bolt actions.

Compared to bigger guns, they seem like toys, but they are very effective in their own way.

Those anschutz are great guns, usually good shooters too. My buddy picked one up at gander mountain they had marked way down.

Come on guys I know its a beautiful gun its a savage. But that was a nice headshot on that hog too. I wasnt gonna shoot one this early but when I had him in the cross hairs @ 75 yards and my camera runnin some how the trigger got squeezed.  I'm hopin to be able to get 150yds out of .17gr bullets. That's what the gun likes. Time will tell.
Also I talked to Coy @ cci . He said case splits are common and not a problem with the .17hmr. However PREFIRED cace splits is a problem and I am sending the remainder of my shells to cci and he said they would replace them and take care of hasmat and shipping and make me happy. I'm all for that. I have really enjoyed this little rifle for only having it a month.

The Remington 597 was recalled and Ruger is not producing one.

I got a letter from CCI and Hornady saying they do not recommended any 17HMR in any semi

If any of you want I can email you the letter

I agree, Natron; as mentioned earlier, my buddy has a volquartzen that shoots extremely well. He's never had significant problem that would make him stop shooting it. Volquartzen's website now brags about them making the only semi-auto in .17HMR. I'd get one if I could afford it.

Amen to that Terminator!!! When we put a suppressor on it the gun sounds like a 22Lr. Very fun to shoot.

UPS stopped by today  Coy from CCI sent me 4 boxes of .17 HMR ammo with an apology for the pre fired case splits on  a few of the 17gr bullets I sent him back.  Cant beat that. I got 2 boxes of polymer tipped v-maxes and 2 boxes or 17gr jhp! I'm in buisness just in time for woodchucker season. woohoo!

Go get 'em Tim. Hope your troubles are behind you with the Hummer. I got out for the first time night before last and busted 3 with my .17 Rem. They don't move when nailed with those 30 gr. Berger hollow points. Good luck with the rest of the season and your film endeavers too. GH2

Thanks Darryl,
I just got the 2nd dvd out its really a good one if I say so myself. We really got with the program. The 1st one was a real learning experience. Live and learn as they say.  I'm ready to try out my new guns. I have a .243 as well as my .17hmr, mini and mighty both savages. I just ordered 2 T C Venture Predator rifles one in  .223 the other in .204  with 1:10 twist. It's gonna be a busy summer!
